Going blind from conjunctivitis? Blue/cloudy eye

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit worried about my rabbit's eye. It seems that he has developed a very bad conjunctivitis in just a day and I'm worried he may be going blind. It all started on Friday, he had all the fur around his eye wet, I thought at first that it was due to obstructed tear ducts because he had this problem a year ago and he had both eyes flushed (and has been okay since then). His eye looked fine that afternoon, just teary. But on Saturday morning, his eye was closed and had mucus. I rushed him to my vet but unfortunately he wasn't there til Monday, they just told me that I should wash his eye with saline and try to open it. After washing it, it looked better, however that afternoon he started having more boogies coming out, swollen eyelid and some kind of blue tint over his pupil, and it really started to look bad. I gave him one dosis of Tobrex eyedrops and rushed him to vet emergency this morning.

The vet told me that his eye looked really bad, he had conjunctivitis and he couldn't be sure that it would be saved. He ruled out blocked tear ducts with the tint test. He has prescribed Tobrex four times a day, antibiotic twice a day and metacam once a day because it seems he has self injured his eye during the night and got an ulcer (a very little white spot). Right now the ulcer seems gone and his eye looks better, it's not as closed, swollen and red as before. However, he still has that blue tint. I know it's soon to say anything but I'm worried as I don't know what this could mean and for the info I've gathered on the Internet it may mean that his sight might have been injured. My main doubt is if this blue cloud/tint is something that could also happen due to an infection and, especially, if it's something that can heal; or if it means that his eye is damaged permanently and won't go away.

Overall, his mood is very, very good. He doesn't seem in pain at all. He's been eating even more than normally, and he's been running and in a very social mood. I'm taking him to the vet on Tuesday to see how he's improving.

I'm sad at the fact that this developed so quickly, in just a day he got his eye so injured, I don't understand it and I'm worried. The other eye seems fine, however the vet told me to put drops in it too because it looked like it could be starting a conjunctivitis too. But it looks pretty fine.

I can't post pictures because I don't have him with me at the time, but I hope someone can shed some light on the cloudy/blue pupil and what I can expect.

With a corneal ulcer, the blue tint could be clouding from infection. If not too severe of an injury to the eye it should clear up with the antibiotic eye drop treatment. Though if the injury is more severe it could take several weeks of eye drop application. If you aren't seeing improvement on those antibiotic eye drops, your vet may need to switch your rabbit to a different antibiotic.

He has this cloudy blue tint over his entire eye, it's not localized like in the pictures. It's like if his eye was lighter than the other one, and his pupil not as black.

I hope you're right and it just gets better with the treatment, and it has not damaged is eyesight.

Honestly, even if the eyesight is damaged (assuming the underlying cause is completely gone)- it's not a big deal. I had a rabbit who was deaf and then later went blind and you couldn't even tell unless you moved the furniture around (which we never did). She even liked it when we put up little cardboard obstacle courses for her to feel her way around. And she was completely blind- she couldn't even tell it was daylight. So even if it is damaged, I would not worry much personally.

It seems now that it's not a conjunctivitis but an uveitis probably caused by e. cuniculi. He's getting better but very slowly and we're not sure about what will happen, it's all happened very fast...

Does anyone have any experience on uveitis? Thank you
