Hi all, i hope someone can help. Im looking for a good book about mini rex rabbits. Im not looking to breed or show my bunny, i would just like to learn more about his breed, personality and characteristics, best diet for his breed, breed specific ailments etc. Most rabbit care and behaviour books are not breed specific and im finding it impossible to find a book that meets my requirements. Does anyone know of a really good mini rex book ? Thank you

I'm really not sure about this one, there has to be breed specific books somewhere. For the most part, I don't think as many rabbit ailments are often as breed specific as many cat and dog ones, but there are a few. In particular with rex rabbits you have to take care of their feet. Since they don't have much fur they are quite prone to sore hocks.

To the best of my knowledge, I believe that mini rexes have the dwarfing gene which may make them slightly more prone to tooth issues as well, malocclusion or overgrown roots, though I think these are more common in dwarf breeds with the extreme features such as netherland dwarf and holland lop. Mini rex don't really have the pushed in face that other dwarf breeds do. In terms of feeding, in my opinion unless you are raising for meat, or have a really specialist breed such as an angora which likely needs some additional help growing/maintaining all that fur, there's really not such a thing as a breed specific diet. All rabbits need lots of fibrous hay, all rabbits should have leafy greens, and then a small serve of daily pellets for vitamins.

You might actually have better luck getting in contact with a breed club and getting information from them, as someone who breeds mini rex should know all the ins and outs of their potential health issues.

Thank you, you have told me something I didn't know already, I didn't know about their feet, this is the kind of thing I am wanting to find out. I will try rex rabbit associations and clubs etc to see if they can recommend any literature, other than that can you recommend a really good general rabbit guide book please ? Thank you

No problem at all, glad I could help :) The two guide books that have been highly recommended to me, and as coincidence would have it I actually have in my amazon cart waiting to purchase next month are "House Rabbit Handbook How to Live With an Urban Rabbit 5th Edition" and "Rabbit Health in the 21st Century 2nd Edition A Guide for Bunny Parents".

Obviously since I don't own them yet I have not read either, but I've been recommended them from several different places so am confident that they're good resources. Plus there's always amazon reviews you can read as well :)

I will surely be purchasing those books you have suggested on payday, they sound just what im looking for. I have just purchased one from the hay experts, its called The hay & greens Diet by fiona campbell. Its only a small booklet but very informative and not too expensive. Thank you for all your help x
