Hi all, lifelong animal owner but new rabbit owner here. I've had Pumbaa for 6 weeks now, he is an indoor house rabbit (in Dubai) with a very healthy appetite and is very active. However I've noticed that his toes look very dry and crusty. Can anyone advise on if this is common/normal? I was going to apply Vaseline to them unless anyone can advise otherwise? Thanks.

It looks like your rabbit may have mange due to burrowing mites, and if so it will need to be treated with either ivermectin or selamectin. If you have a vet that can do a skin scrape, this can help determine if it is mites or not.

Ivermectin comes as an injectable solution (can also be given orally), or a spot on topical application. Dosage is 0.4mg/kg, for at least 3 treatments, 14 days apart.

Selamectin(brand names Revolution or Stonghold) is applied topically. Dosage to apply topically is 18mg/kg, retreat in 30 days if needed.

Always ensure that dosage calculations are correct, as an under dose will make it less effective, and an overdose can be dangerous to the rabbit.

There is also a chance it could instead be a fungal infection.

Hi Jenny, thanks for your reply. I checked this website - http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Skin_diseases/Parasitic/Mange/Sarcoptes.htm - and it does look like what he has. I have one question though - we have another rabbit, bought at the same time, and he is not showing any symptoms at all. Is mange contagious through contact? They snuggle together all the time, so do we need to get them both treated, or just the one showing symptoms?
Thanks.

For future reference, we took them both to a vet and it was diagnosed as magne/mites.
