This evening we just noticed one of our two pet rabbits with what looks like a very serious sore. As we look at it, it almost appears there is something moving in the sore. I imagine it may be her actual muscle movement as she breathes, but nevertheless, it is very disturbing.

Can anyone give me any indication of what may cause this and what you would do to treat?

Thanks for your help.

I think it could be a botfly. Especially if you see something moving. You should google and check to see if you have them in your region. They are gross but I think they excrete something that kills infection so as long as its not infected, when you remove the botfly the wound heals and recovery is good.

It could also be a abscess, In my book an abscess is worst than a botfly. Either way you should probably go to a good rabbit savvy vet.

Also, If it is a botfly, and you try to remove it yourself, you need to be very careful to get the whole thing if any part of it doesn't come out it will cause an infection.

What squidpop said. It's botfly larva. Do not try and remove it yourself. There are toxins that can be released if the whole larva isn't removed intact. You need to get your bun to a good rabbit vet to have the larva carefully removed. Your bun may then need to be put on antibiotics in case of infection, and an anti inflammatory pain med like meloxicam.
