Hi, can anyone confirm the safe use of cisapride for a two-week duration?

My vet prescribed it and did not know how long I should use it. The pharmacy could not tell me. I've tried to contact for help, other vets. Of course, this is ridiculous!

My rescued Dutch bunny is not eating hardly anything or drinking her water, and when I got her over 3 weeks ago, she was obese. So we came down to a gut motility agent which is perking her up, and are on the 6th day of treatment.

This endeavor is going to take a while for the cisapride to work.:sickbunny:

Answer: It works well. It got her gut working and she started eating, and at night it prevented a sluggish gut from creating unformed mushy stools.

It is safe to use long-term.

This is for all those of us who are finding the "saavy vet" getting tired of keeping up with the latest information and leaving it up to us to learn on our own.:rabbithop

Sorry this got missed. I'm glad the med seems to be helping. I do know of rabbits that have had to be on gut stimulants longterm. It's a matter of weighing risks vs. benefits. 2 weeks isn't too long though. If your bun is still on it, I think when you are getting to the end of it's use, if your vet hasn't discussed gradually weaning her off of it, that would be good to do. It should help to slowly transition off of it then to just suddenly stop the med.

Well, I took her off the cisapride and had transitioned with Bene-bac in the process. What I worried about was a gut trained on the stimulant, and we had a bout with messy stool, but the Bene-bac really restored her immediately. My vet wanted me to stop the med in 5 days, which would have been pointless. Thank you for your reply. I need the input.

I have really been disappointed with the kind of vets around here we have.
They leave you to yourself when they run out of ideas. Even the pharmacist couldn't give me a simple answer about a prescription. Can you imagine what it is to be given medicine that the doctor doesn't know how long you can use it for?!:eek:hwell:

Glad it worked well and your bun is doing better. Just curious, was the bene bac the plus one, and was it the powder or gel? I've been looking into what probiotic seems to be the best for rabbits.

I've been a bit disappointed in vets too. Last one didn't have up to date knowledge on the best dosing for a common med used for rabbits, plus she was quite condescending and seemed to have problems listening to my concerns. Suffice it to say I won't be going back to that vet. Problem is that most vets just don't have enough experience with rabbits. Wish we in the US, had some of the great rabbit specialists that the UK has. I'm sure there are a few scattered around the country here, but doesn't do much good for a rabbit owner if one of the good ones isn't nearby.

Hi--the Bene-bac is "Plus", and I'm glad I was able to get an upgrade for the best results. That's all the store carries, anyway. It's the powder form. Some say the gel absorbs into the gut better.

You mention England. I think bene-bac originated there, while for a while, here, you could only get it on-line. I wish I'd had this stuff years ago.
