We are going to have babies in April. we know nothing about whelping or dealing with the newborns. Please give us some help in this or a few books in which, we could purchased to get ready for the new babies.

The birthing process in rabbits is referred to as "kindling". Gestation is approximately 31 days. A sturdy nesting box should be provided at least 3 days before the doe's due date. Kindling should happen rather quickly. If complications occur, a visit to the vet may be necessary. The doe's feed can be slowly increased to full feed by the time the kits begin coming out of the nest box by 14 days, when their eyes should open.

Greetings!

You may want to check out:http://www.mybunny.org/info/newborn.htm? Also, the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeder Association) is worth browsing through.

As for Books, I really like a book called "Rabbits for Dummies" by A.Pavia. It has a lot of good information, is under $20, and follows up with pictures such as sexing a rabbit, etc., for things that are harder to determine. I pick up any rabbit care book I see that I don't have. Old, new, it doesn't matter to me.

A valued and very knowledgeable breeder on this board will always put in a word for "Rabbit Production" by McNitt, Patton, Lukefahr, & Cheeke. That book is a textbook and more scientific. Although half of it I understand and the other half I still struggle with, it's a great book to have on hand. It runs in the $35 range.

The posters in this forum are very knowledgeable and helpful. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you run into something that troubles you.
