Surgery is necessary to fix patellar luxation (our dog has the condition).

Pippa, our Yorkshire terrier, has this condition too, however a very mild form. We'll need to monitor over the years, and maybe treatment in the future will be necessary :(. Needless to say, we haven't bred from her- we spayed her the next week, as it can be genetic.

Hi, I was able to find this article on elbow luxation in rabbits. It's clearly written for a vet:
http://wildlife1.wildlifeinformation.org/S/00dis/PhysicalTraumatic/ElbowLuxationRabbit.html

I have not found any other things on this condition. The article above probably describes luxation of the joint in one of the forelegs, not a hindleg, but I can't be sure.

This article describes surgical correction of simple fractures in rabbits:
http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Bone_diseases/Osteo/fracture.PDF

It is fine for a bone surgeon to do the surgery as it shouldn't be much different in rabbits than in other animals of the same size. However, anesthesia will be quite different and aftercare will also be different. In a dog or cat, antibiotics and steroids might be part of the aftercare. A rabbit shouldn't have these, and pain medication might need to be stronger. I would think narcotic pain meds should definitely be included.

There is a lot of good information on anesthesia for rabbits on this page:
http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Surgery/Surgery_main.htm

And some more pre- and post-operative care here:
http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/Surgery/Postsurgery_main.htm

Most bunnies will remove their bandages and collars don't work very well with them.
