I have a dwarf lop rabbit who is 6 years old thisyear. She has been de-sexed because she had cancer and when the vetsdid this, they said that she had a 'systic'(not sure if thats how uspell it but it sounds that way) kidney. In the past 3 days i havenoticed her drinking a lot more than normal. Two nights ago, she wet inher bed and all on the floor of her hutch, she also did this again thenext night but not last night as far as i could tell. She spends allday in the yard so i have no clue but i suspect she could be wettingherself constantly because her tail and fur around her bottom is stillwet.
Is there any reason why she is doing this? Could it have somthing to dowith her kidney or her oldish age? and if so, how can i help her?

PLEASE HELP she is my favourite bunny and has a great personality, much like a dog

Thankyou,
Nikki

Get her to the vet ASAP. It sounds like what myBig BUns was doing and she had a urinary tract infection and with yourbabys kidney I would have her put on antibiotics as soon as you can. Please keep us posted. Mine was put on real long term antibiotics andit is helping she also had cancer when spayed

The vet can prescribe meds to make her more comfortable, but she is getting up in years, and age is most likely a factor.

Welcome to the forum, Blank_Shrimp, :)

You and the little one will be in my thoughts and prayers as you proceed.

Keep us posted.

thankyou all very much, i plan on getting in touchwith her breeder and vet as soon as i have time (school work is gettingvery hectic) hopefully this weekend and hearing what they have to sayabout the situation. my worst fear is that she is getting on and willnot be with us much longer, i've grown very attached to her as she hasa wonderful personality, you would love to meet her.

thankyou all

if you have any other thoughts on the problem they would be greatly appreaciated

yes, she did have cancer of the uterus about 3 years ago and i fearedthen that i would loose her as she was loosing massive amounts ofblood, i am very lucky to still have her with me

we visited the vet on wednesday and they stronglybelieve that her kidneys have failed. they refered us to a rabbitspecialist but he is about a 2 hr drive away and at her age, i'm notsure mopsy would appreciate that much. i believe that it would be toostressful for her and it wouldn't help her anyway, just confirm ourfears. we then spoke to her breeder that night and she told us that allof her rabbits only live to be about 5 or 6 so mopsy has had a decenttime. she said that before they die, her rabbits all continuously wetthemselves and there is nothing you can do about it.
so basicaly, there is nothing we can do for her except provide her withas much food as she needs (she has also lost a lot of weight) and keepher warm and comfortable as winter approachs. she doesn't seem to havemuch time left but shes had a fair go at life considering we werethinking of having her put down 3 years ago when she had cancer.

thank you all for your help and good wishes, i will keep you posted about her progress

Nikki

6 isn't that old though. Is there anything else you could try? Shestill looks very young, and so cute! I'm sorry to hear she's sick.

6 years isn't old for us, but that's a Senior agefor a rabbit! She probably has good years ahead of her, but she is anold lady.

hmm..your probably right, 5 doesn't sound very oldbut all the vets andbreeders over here say 5-7 is a good agefor a rabbit living in australia. she has certainly done well forherself since she has already had one stressful operation in her life

her health is slowly deteriorating and the vets and i strongly believethat is its her kidneys since she has only had one for at least thepast 3 years it wouldn't have taken much for the other to fail aswellwith the doubled workload. her back legs also seem to be giving way andthere is nothing we can do for her. i have been speaking with the vetregularly and the only thing we can do is put her through the stress ofa 4 hr drive just to prove to ourselves what the problem is, itwouldn't be fair on her.

i'm just glad that we didn't give up on her 3 years ago when she hadcancer, it realy wouldv'e been a waste. she has had so many fun timessince then and provided us with much laughter and joy. Yes she is avery cute little darling with a great personality, its sad to thinkthat her time has come.

i remember when i went to pick her up that her breeder wanted me totake her sister because mopsy was very thin but i was 10 at the timeand i just wouldn't take her, i desperatly wanted mopsy, now i'm glad iwas so determined. she is a great rabbit and its scary to think howearly her life might have ended if anyone else had bought her. i amaspiring to become a vet and one day i hope to find a way to makekidney problems not so bad for pet owners

mopsy when she was just a baby \/

Nikki, I can see why you chose to takeher home she was a very cute little bunny. She is a beautifuladult rabbit now andI can tell how much you loveher. The thing to do now is to show her muchattention and love and make her feel as comfortable aspossible. From reading your other posts I know thatthe breeder told you about the history of the longevity of herrabbits. I think that you should feel comfortable knowingthat you have done the very best that you can do for your littlebun. It is great to hear that you have decided to become avet.Have you decided to do thisbecauseof Mopsy's illness? That wouldbe so great to think that one day you may be taking care of othergenerations of Mopsy's family. From what I understand, thereare not very many vets who specialize in taking care ofrabbits. So if this is what you will actually do, you will behelping out a lot of rabbit owners. AsIhave said before, keep us posted and know that we are here to listenwhen you need to talk.**Hug Hug** Beckie

Beckie, i have always wanted to be a vet eversince i can remember but i'm unsure as to whether i want to become anequine vet or specialise in rabbits or just be an 'ordinary' vet. mylocal vets have performed many experimental procedures on my rabbitbecause there are no rabbit vets in our area and this will certainlyaffect my schooling decisions in the future when my love for rabbitsand horses comes head to head.

thankyou everyone again for your continued support. Mopsy is doing wellfor herself considering her condition. She is eating enough but stillseems to be loosing weight which can't be helped. She is also loosingfur underneath for some reason probably due to urine scald that she hadearly on when the problem began but it isn't getting any worse becausei have been washing her bottom and applying vaseline to keep themoisture away. Her back legs also seem to be slowly failing her.

she doesn't seem to be loosing her personality or love for life though, she still enjoys munching on and throwing the autumn leaves around theyard when it is warm enough and dry enough for her to be let outalthough she now enjoys scratching me when i pick her up in theafternoons to apply her vaseline. after having mopsy for so long i hadforgotten how much it hurt to be scratched by an angry rabbit!

Nikki

Sounds like you are doing a good job ofgivingMopsy the best of care. If she can get mad atyou she still has a lot of spirit in her heart. I think thatshe will hold a very special place in your heart for a verylong time. I have 2 rabbits that I havehad for about 2 1/2 years now. I think they are about 3 yearsold now. They were given to me because the former owners didnot want them any more. They are mixed breeds butthey have been so much joy for me.Icannot imagine how you feel right now. You have grow enupwith your bun, so to speak. Or I guessI should say that you both have grow en up together! She hasbeen a very lucky bunny to have someone who has loved her somuch. Give her a hug form all of us on this forum. Also a lots of **hugs, hugs** to you too. Beckie

I'm new here but I couldn't help but be pulled toyour plea for help...I am a bit of a naturalist and it soulds like youroptions are few for your poor bun...something that helps peaple withurinary problems is cranberry juice, when we first got our bunns theywern't in the best shape but when I got them home I put some cranberryjuice in their water to ensure that there was no bladder problems (alsoseems to help with wet tail in small rodents)...kind of like thevanilla thing only I was a bit generous with the juice...I did this forone week and they are very healthy had very large first litters andbabies are doing great!

you could try it ... it may or may not help ... but it shouldn't hurt.

Good luck

thankyou for your ideas and everyone for their support, i will try the cranberry juice.

mopsy seems to be getting fed up with all the washing and stuff thatshe has to go through each day but she is still pretty much herselfalthough she is still loosing more fur and weight. shes seems to havecaught a chill today while she was out in the yard becasue it is verycold here at the moment but she loves getting out amongst the leavesand grass so i think it is best that she keeps doing that even if shedoes get cold. patches of her skin on the legs was also blueish when ibathed her this afternoon, her skin felt very warm and i'm not sure ifthis is bruising or not.

nikki & mopsy

my dog (who got breast cancer the same time mopsy got cancer but isstillacting like a puppy despite thefact that shehas had no treatment, she is9)and my firstrabbit, flopsy who is from the same breeder as mopsy, unfortunately hedied of heat stress

-sorry, picture didn't work for some reason, hopefully it will work this time...-
