I was lookingthrough rabbit breeds on the ARBA website, just to see if I couldfigure out what Elf is.http://http://www.arba.net/photo.htm]http://www.arba.net/photo.htm]http://http://www.arba.net/photo.htm[/url]

I'm pretty convinced that she is a Palomino from the look of her. Just to be sure, I looked up Palomino rabbits.

So, being that she looks exactly like the bunnies on those pages, I'm pretty sure that's what I have. She isn't the rabbit I would've picked out, but my son chose her for me. The ill-informed petshop owners assured my husband that she was a dwarf.HA! I could've told them she wasn't just by the ears alone.

After looking at the websites, I was surprised to find out that she is a MEAT rabbit (ugh). Small bones...lots of meat. Yeah, that's my Elf. :pMy dad used to tease me when I was growing up, saying he'd switch the chicken with rabbit meat some day and I'd never know the difference. I boycotted chicken meat for the lonnnnngest time.

So, do you think I'm right? Did I adopt a Palomino into my family? :D

Well, "Elf" certainly doesn't look like an elf:) How much does she weigh and what color are her eyes (brown or blue-grayish)? Her photos reminded me more of a fawn flemish, but she could be a Pal.

Palominos actually originated in the US from a mix of rabbits of unknown heritage. Other large breeds can also be fawn in color, so there's no way to be certain (meat breeds are commonly crossed with other meat breeds) -- but knowing her weight would be of some help.

She *appears* to have the softer rollback coat that a flemish would have. The Palomino has a commercial flyback coat.

The Palomino doe for show weighs 9-11 pounds, where Flemish weigh 14 pounds and over.

We don't have a scale in the house, so I can't give you an exact weight. She's one big bunny, though. I'd really think it's hilarious when my hubby thought he was getting a pocket-bunny (dwarf), if we wound up with a giant.

My first rabbit was a Flemish Giant named Brindy (because of her brindle color).

I wish i had a dollar for every time someone said the pet store told me it was a dwarf.I dont know why people dont want large breeds for pets i had a new zealand red was the sweetest rabbit ever.bluebird

With horses palominos are akind of blondish/yellow colour (the colour of the rabbit under your avatar) so whether they are the same i dont no.

Palomino rabbits actually come in two different colors: Golden and Lynx. The Lynx has a dusting of lilac over it's coat and has blue gray eyes. The Golden has brown eyes. Both are agouti colors (so both have the typical agouti/tan pattern markings on the belly, under tail, eye circles, nose and ear lacing) and both have white under color when you blow into the coat.

Brown Eyes...CHECK

Agouti Markings....CHECK

White underneath her fur...CHECK (OMG I just blew on my bunny to find out :p)

Remember those old Easy Bake Ovens? Well this is the gross boy version, the Queasy Bake Cookerator. It's the same size as the Easy Bake ones if that gives you a general idea of Elf's size.

Edit: Oh, and Loz, the Avatar is Elf when we first bought her--little ball of fluff as big as the palm of my hand. :D

What nice photos! They also give a really good view of the body type, which looks more commercial(Palomino) than the Flemish Giant's semi arch type with lower, longer shoulders. The photos also give a better indication of size(in the previous ones, she looked HUGE! These bring her a little down to the size of a Palomino standard. By all indications she appears to meet the Golden Palomino standard (or a fawn version of another commercial breed) -- which is really what Pals are any how :)

New Zealand Reds are also a non-extension color, which could be another source of your rabbits heritage. I wish I could see her fur in person. In most of the photos, it appeared to be a softer rollback coat. But in a couple of the more recent ones you posted, it appears sleeker and lying close to the body.

Greetings ElfMommy,

I swear, you could make money on those closeups you take of Elf.They're SO darned cute. I wish you'd hook up with Hallmark; Elf would make an Excellent Easter card. Melts me every time. You Really have a good eye for the camera, and Elf just poses away. They're so much fun!:dude:

I have to agree with Carolyn, Elf's cute face would definately look great on a hallmark card.. especially the picture under Bat-Girl playing with the Batman toys. Can definately see that picture turned into a cute greeting!

Thank you for the compliments, all! :) I'll have to start thinking up some Hallmark-like slogans to go along with the photos. I do have a friend who is very web-savvy and might be able to help me set up a site with those E-Greetings. Then we could use everyone's bun pictures to send smiles to each other...friends...family. OK, now my brain is working overtime.Let's see what we can do :D

Whilst we are on the subject of Elf's colouring......I had posted awhile back about Jez's markings UNDER her fur...so if you dont mind give Elf a little blow again, hehe and see if she has any of those "tatoo's" . Since they resemble each other so much, I am just curious to know....The tatoo's were these little reddish markings on her skin, btw-did Elf have a little V on her head when she was a baby that later on grew into a darker colour on her head?

Curious minds need to know (okay, just me really)

Bubbles! I'm gonna have to try that.. my dog useto go nuts chasing bubbles in the yard lol maybe my bunny will get akick out of them too :D

After some vigorous bunny-blowing today, I did not find anything but white fur underneath. There was nothing that looked like a tatoo. I even checked her belly while I was trimming her nails today (she's not too thrilled about belly-blowing). I don't recall any dark mark on her forehead either. When she was a baby she was an orange fluff ball. She looked different from every other bunny in the bin, which is why my son picked her out.

Sorry it took me so long to answer this one. I went on a business trip to Reno and this week my son freaked me out completely by almost slicing his nose off. Life is never dull in my house.
